Instant Rava Dosa (Savory Rice and Semolina Crepes)

IMG_1162I have admitted it before and I will say it again – Breakfast is not my thing really. Why? Well, for one, weekday mornings are so hectic and so I have to make do with cereal and or homemade cereal bars  and two, I love to sleep in during the weekends (sheepish smile)… So making an elaborate breakfast is not my thing although I do acknowledge that eating a healthy breakfast is really very important for you!. Hence what I do love are breakfast ideas that are easy and not so time consuming! One favorite is the Indian traditional ‘upma’, which is a simple dish with a ‘polenta’ like consistency made out of semolina. Traditional South Indian breakfast items include Idli and Dosas which I like to make for lunch or dinner but never for breakfast!  But there is this ‘instant dosa’ that I do make for breakfast since it does not need any advance planning!  What that means is that even if I wake up at 8 in the morning, I can serve these instant dosas at 9 am to the family and impress them! 🙂

The traditional dosa batter with rice and lentils needs to ferment overnight while this instant dosa can be made out of semolina (rava) and yoghurt/buttermilk (I have posted the recipe for dosas before). This instant dosa recipe comes in handy when you are in the mood for dosas and want to eat them instantly! These are also great as a snack for the kids anytime of the day. My amma used to make these for us for a snack along with evening tea. Here is the recipe and I am also bringing these instant dosas to Fiesta Friday #30

Instant Rava Dosa (Savory Rice and Semolina Crepes)

  • Time: About 45 minutes

This recipe will make about 15  small dosas


  • 1 1/2 cups rava (semolina)
  • 1/2 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or 1/2 cup plain yoghurt mixed with 1/2 cup water)
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 green chillies, chopped fine (optional)
  • 5-6 fresh curry leaves, torn into small pieces
  • 1/4 inch piece of ginger, chopped fine (about 1/2 tsp)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped fine
  • 1/2 medium size red onion, chopped fine
  • 2 1/2 cups -3 cups water
  • Olive oil or coconut oil for greasing pan


Take a medium size bowl and add the semolina and the rice flour.  Then add the buttermilk (or the yoghurt and water mixture) and the salt and stir with a spoon to mix.

Then add the green chillies, curry leaves,ginger,cilantro and the onion and again mix well.

Add the water slowly and stir until you get a thin pancake like batter. (Batter should be such a consistency that it can easily be poured – loose batter)

Now heat a shallow frying pan and brush with the oil.  Then pour a ladle of batter (about 1/2 cup) and spread using a circular motion of your hand to form a thin dosa. Sprinkle a little bit of oil on the edges of the dosa so that it turns crispy on the edges.  Cover with a lid and cook on medium flame for about 1 minute or so until you see the edges starting to get crispy. Then flip the dosa and again cook for about another 30 seconds or so.  Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm.  Finish making all the dosas this way.

Serve the dosas warm along with any kind of chutney.!


Stir the batter well every time before pouring onto the pan since the semolina tends to settle down.

  3. These look yummy, Indu. I usually have to have cold pre-prepared oats for breakfast because I don’t have time to cook a meal. These crepes look easy to do and so beautiful to boot!
