Around the World #1: Gambas al Pil Pil (Sizzling shrimp with garlic)

aroundtheworldrecipesSizzling Shrimp tapas

Tapas and tapas bar have to be Spain’s most enduring gastronomic icons. Tapas include a wide variety of appetizers, or snacks and may be served cold (such as mixed olives and cheese) or hot (such as chopitos, which are battered, fried baby squid). A Tapa is traditionally just a single bite but you can order a larger portion too. It is also not uncommon to just order many different tapas and combine them to make a complete meal.  Doesn’t that sound like fun?

Browsing through ‘tapas’ recipes, this shrimp tapa originating from Basque served sizzling at the table caught my attention immediately. Cooked in olive oil with lots of garlic and a dash of sherry and lemon juice, this is one irresistible shrimp dish! You may want to have some bread on hand to soak in the delicious pan juices. Such a simple recipe …yet loads of flavor – I loved the sauce so much that I could not stop myself from digging into the pan with my hands and licking my fingers. 🙂

I am bringing this flavorful and sizzling shrimp dish to Angie’s Fiesta Friday this week!

  1. I love gambas al pil pil! Takes me back to when I lived in Spain. Everything about it is delicious. It has been years since I’ve had them! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  2. This dish looks so very tasty, with all the garlic and lemon and spices…

Interestingly, I’ve just started writing the recipe for tomorrow, and it’s also shrimp in a pan – though with Asian flavors… 🙂
